The
Malawi
National Flag is
composed of three horizontal stripes of black, red and green, with a
rising sun superimposed on the black stripe. The black represents the
people of Africa, the red represents the blood of martyrs for African
freedom and the green represents the evergreen nature of Malawi.
The National Crest
bears
the
motto “Unity and Freedom” and has a rising
sun at the top and
bottom, representing the dawn of freedom in Africa.
The fish, eagle, and the wavy blue and white bands on the shield
symbolize Lake
Malawi. The lion and the leopard serve to guard the crest. The land at
the base
represents the rugged mountains of Malawi.
