The President
His Excellency Dr Bingu wa Mutharika is the President of the Republic of Malawi, from May 2004. His Excellency President Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika is a holder of Masters Degree in Economics from University of Delhi, India and PhD in Development Economics from the Pacific Western University, USA. His Excellency President Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika has a long career experience at the World Bank, the Economic Commission of Africa and the Preferential Trade Area (PTA) - the precursor to the Common Market of the Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) for which he was its founding Secretary General.
His Excellency the President Dr. Bingu Wa Mutharika was elected to a five-year term following elections in May 2004. His inaugural speech was entitled “The Road to Prosperity – A New Vision for Malawi.” In this speech, His Excellency set out his plans to reduce poverty, bring about prosperity and make life better for every Malawian.
