MALAWI GOVERNMENT DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES

The Government of Malawi has put in place the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS) to create wealth through sustainable economic growth and infrastructure development as a means of achieving poverty reduction.

The MGDS emphasizes six key priority areas of agriculture and food security; irrigation and water development; transport infrastructure development; energy generation and supply; integrated rural development; and prevention and management of nutrition disorders, and HIV/AIDS.

These six key priority areas are also expected to accelerate the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the areas of health, education, gender, environment, and governance.

MALAWI GEOGRAPHY

Malawi (formerly Nyasaland) is categorized as a sub-Saharan country, located in  south-eastern Africa,  bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the north and Mozambique to the south, east and west.

The Malawi National Flag consists of three horizontal bands of black, red and green.

The Great Rift Valley runs through the country from north to south. In this deep trough lies Lake Malawi, the third-largest lake in Africa, and the 10th largest in the world.  Lake Malawi make about 20 per cent of the total Malawi's area.

The rising sun is superimposed on the centre of the black stripe.  The black represents the people of Africa while the red represents the blood of the martyrs for African freedom.  The green represents the ever green nature of Malawi.

The Shire River flows from the south end of the lake and joins the Zambezi River 400 km  further south in Mozambique.

The National Crest has a rising sun at the top and bottom, representing the dawn of freedom in Africa.

East and west of the Rift Valley are high plateaus, generally between 900 and 1,200 m above sea level.

The fish eagle and wavy bands on the shield symbolize Lake Malawi while the lion and the leopard guard the crest as a whole.  The land at the base represents the rugged mountains of Malawi.   The crest bears the motto "Unity and Freedom".
